What is companion care?

How is companion care different from personal or medical home care?
Companion care focuses on social interaction, light housekeeping, and daily living assistance, while personal care includes hands-on support with bathing, dressing, and hygiene. Medical home care involves skilled nursing or therapy services.
Who can benefit from companion care services?
Companion care is ideal for seniors living alone, individuals with mild cognitive impairment, or anyone needing assistance with daily activities but not requiring medical care.
What services are included in companion care?
• Light housekeeping and meal preparation
• Medication reminders
• Transportation to appointments or errands
• Engaging in conversation and recreational activities
• Assistance with daily routines (but no medical tasks)
Can a companion caregiver provide medical assistance?
No, companion caregivers do not provide medical or hands-on personal care. However, they can remind clients to take medications and assist with non-medical needs. HCOC does have qualified healthcare specialists to assist with medical needs.
How do you match caregivers with clients?
We assess client preferences, needs, and personality to match them with a compatible caregiver. We strive for consistency to build trust and familiarity.
How many hours of care can be provided?
We offer flexible care plans, including a few hours per week, full-day care, or 24/7 companionship.
How much does companion care cost?
Costs vary based on location, hours needed, and level of care. Some services may be covered by long-term care insurance or veteran benefits.
Do you offer respite care for family caregivers?
Yes! We provide short-term and temporary relief for family caregivers to prevent burnout.
Are your caregivers trained and screened?
Yes, all caregivers undergo background checks, training, and ongoing education to ensure high-quality care.
Can I meet my caregiver before starting services?
Yes! We encourage meet-and-greet visits to ensure compatibility and comfort.
What happens if my caregiver is unavailable?
We have backup caregivers available to ensure uninterrupted care.
Do you offer respite care for families?
Yes, we offer respite care services to provide temporary relief for family caregivers. Whether you need short-term support for a few hours, days, or longer, our trained caregivers can step in to ensure your loved one receives quality care while you take time to rest and recharge.
Can I meet my caregiver in person?
Yes, it is required to meet your caregiver in person—whether it’s a health caregiver or a home companion. This meeting helps ensure compatibility and supports the delivery of optimal care. In urgent situations, emergent care is available and assessed prior to placement.
